Ashlei M. Sutton: WELCOME TO THE BIG SHOW

In celebration of G L O R I O U S weather, we're excited to run an equally ~glorious~ photo set from DMV photographer Ashlei M. Sutton. Having spent the last two basketball seasons documenting The George Goodman League in SE, she's amassed an incredible series of imagery – portraits, players, and attendees – taken during Summer games at the Barry Farms Dwellings courts.

"For the past thirty years The George Goodman League has been a safe haven for basketball fans in the Washington Metropolitan area. The League has played host to NBA Players like Kevin Durant, Nick Young, and Gilbert Arenas; U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan; former And 1 streetballers Baby Shaq and White Chocolate, along with many college and local players.

Located east of the Anacostia River in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the nation's capital, The League started in 1975 as the Barry Farms Community Basketball League, but was later changed to the George Goodman League to honor former Barry Farm resident, George Goodman, who was murdered in 1984.

Commissioner Miles Rawls has grown the League to attract fans all over the country who come watch premier street ball in Washington, DC. Summer basketball on the tough asphalt Inside the Gates is something Goodman League fans forward to [every year]."

DEEP IN THE WILDS OF FINLAND: David Bellard

David Bellard is a DC-based photographer and artist whose passion is preserving and advancing the art of film photography. We've previously hosted his work in our FEATURED gallery, and love keeping up with what he's putting out by way of his website, davidbellard.com, and Instagram, @davidbellard – which is where we first saw imagery from "Deep in the Wilds of Finland," a series based on photographs of the forests in central Finland, specifically the old growth forests in Kainuu region. We're glad to share a selection from the set; you can head to his blog to view it in its entirety.

"I'm an analog photographer, mainly I shoot medium format color transparency film on rangefinder cameras. This medium and process lends itself well to natural subjects, and in this series the aged aesthetics of film photography truly captures the ancient feel of the woods, where our measurements of time mean nothing." David exhibits his photo and print work regularly in Washington, Maryland, Virginia and around the world (and has a show coming up, this Thursday, September 17, in DC as part of the WPA's Lobby Project). David is the Creative Director for Global Programs at Rare, an environmental/social marketing NGO, and tweets at @davebellard.

Dayanita Ramesh is a comic comic! She does stand up comedy and writes/illustrates comics about a girl who deals with real and surreal issues. She loves art, loves to talk about feminism, race and economics (amongst other things), and really loves cookies. She moved to Washington D.C. in 2012 to go to graduate school at Johns Hopkins SAIS, and has a B.A. and M.A. in International Relations & Economics.
